Fertilizing Pecan Trees

It's time to fertilize your pecan trees!  Pecan trees require a substantial amount of nitrogen to produce their crop and to encourage continued growth.  Many pecan 'experts' recommend a blended fertilizer mixture specially formulated for the requirements of pecan trees.  However, the chances are slim to none of actually being able to locate pre-mixed pecan fertliizer or find a fertilizer dealer who is willing to mix small amounts of fertilizer for those of us needing just enough for our backyard trees.  I have found that an application of Ammonium Sulfate (20-0-0) is generally sufficient to supply a pecan tree with most of it's needed nitrogen.  Ammonium Sulfate is readily available at most garden centers and fertilizer dealers, and is one of the least expensive fertlilizers available today.  For more information on fertilizing pecan trees, see our section on this topic.

Question from Johnny: I want to plant and grow the largest pecan tree possible. Which strain of pecan tree will get the largest? I live in Bakersfield California. I am more interested in the awesome size and looks of the tree than in the quality of the nut.Can you help? I Appreciate it.
