It's time to prune your pecan tree

If you haven't already begun your spring pruning chores, now is the time to do it.  The best time to prune your pecan trees is from mid-February through the end of March.  Minor pruning can be continued through May.  Start by removing any dead limbs from your pecan tree.  Any branches hanging lower than your head should be removed.  Always keep in mind when pruning that your goal is to train your tree to grow the way you want it to grow.  Use good judgement when pruning.  Do not remove too much growth as you may cause stress to the tree.  This will set your pecan tree back and it may lose up to a year's growth as it struggles to overcome this stress.  For more pruning tips, see our section on Pecan tree pruning.
